Caridina babaulti “Zebra” OE are a true exception in our shop: they are not Neocaridina shrimp but members of the Caridina genus, which is highly unusual for our assortment. So why do we breed and offer this line at all? Quite simple: Babaultis are a species that, compared to other Caridina, prefers relatively hard water and therefore has similar requirements to Neocaridina. Most importantly, we are absolutely fascinated by the orange eyes, which are present in all animals of our Babaulti “Zebra” line.
How stable is this line?
The best part about this line is that no selection is necessary. All animals (100%) show the characteristic zebra pattern and orange eyes in their offspring.
Caridina and Neocaridina with orange eyes?
The orange eyes of the Babaulti breeding forms look identical to the orange eyes seen in Neocaridina. We published a detailed report on these shrimp in Caridina Magazine (Issue 2/2022).
Size at sale
Shrimp for sale have a minimum size of 0.8 cm, just short of sexual maturity. If sexually mature animals are included, we naturally ensure a balanced sex ratio.
General information on keeping and breeding:
In comparison to most other members of the genus Caridina, Babaultis prefer relatively hard water and can usually be kept easily in normal tap water (20–26 °C). In our facility, the tap water values are: pH 7.6, gH 10, kH 9, conductivity 600 µS, 22 °C. Remineralizing reverse-osmosis water with Neocaridina salt (GH+/KH+) also works perfectly and usually results in stable reproduction.
While some say that different genera/species of shrimp should not be kept together, others point out that different shrimp species naturally coexist in the same biotopes. In our experience, both Caridina babaulti and Neocaridina grow and reproduce without any issues when kept together in the same tank — and they provide a beautiful variety of colors.
